“We declare to you what was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have looked at and touched with our hands, concerning the word of life.” 1 John 1:1
The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales has designated 2020 as the ‘The God Who Speaks: The Year of the Word’ to celebrate the 10th anniversary of verbum Domini- Pope Benedict XVI’s Apostolic Exhortation on ‘The Word of the Lord’. And 1600th anniversary of the death of St Jerome, who translated the Bible into Latin.
Therefore, 2020 will be a year of celebrating, living and sharing God’s word through a range of events, activities and resources, available across the dioceses of England and Wales.
‘Scripture is at the centre of everything the church does. The Word of God shapes our prayer and worship. The Bible shows us how to understand the world, how we are called to live and relate to each other.’
In partnership with the Bible Society, ‘The God Who Speaks: The Year of the Word’ focuses on celebrating, living and sharing God’s Word throughout the Catholic Church in England and Wales.
In keeping with the church’s three year cycle, there will also be a specific focus on St Matthew’s Gospel.

“According to all that I am going to show you, as the pattern of the tabernacle and the pattern of all its furniture, just so you shall construct it.”

Incline thy ear to me, rescue me speedily! Be thou a rock of refuge for me, a strong fortress to save me! Yea, thou art my rock and my fortress; for thy name’s sake lead me and guide me, take me out of the net which is hidden for me, for thou art my refuge. Into thy hand I commit my spirit; thou hast redeemed me, O LORD, faithful God. Thou hates those who pay regard to vain idols; but I trust in the LORD.
1 Corinthians 10:31
“So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”
It is he who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them like a tent to dwell in;
“Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favour with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus.”
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.
Praise Him with timbrel and dancing; Praise Him with stringed instruments and pipe.
1 Corinthians 6:19-20
“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honour God with your bodies.”
“If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.”
Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me?
Up to seven times?
Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.
All things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; you are Mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, nor shall the flame scorch you.”
