The Humanities Department is staffed by a full complement of teachers who specialise in History, Geography and Politics. We are a hardworking team who are passionate and dedicated to our subjects. We take seriously our responsibility to provide a high quality Catholic education and strive to promote the ethos of the academy in our words, actions and relationships through our teaching of the Humanities subjects.
The Curriculum
We teach History and Geography as distinct academic subjects, with a full and varied programme of study for each subject. We seek to develop our students’ understanding of their place in the world and society in its historical and geographical context. The knowledge they gain helps them understand their rights and responsibilities towards all members of society.
At KS4 we offer GCSEs in both History and Geography which are integral to the English Baccalaureate. Both subjects develop students’ analytical and thinking skills which are sought after by employers and prepare students for further study at A Level and the world of work alike. In History we study the Modern World (20th Century), Medicine through time and the Normans. Geography contains both human and physical elements. We offer field trips to encourage and engage students in their learning.
Our popular A Level courses in History and Politics are delivered by very experienced staff. At KS5 History we study Russia, The Tudors and Ireland plus the students are given the opportunity to develop an independent study which can be a topic of their choice. Our students often develop a passion for their chosen subjects and they regularly achieve good grades, progressing to further and higher education in many different subject areas.
